June is Acne Awareness Month: Busting Acne Myths

Anyone who has acne will tell you how aware they are of it every day. Acne is unlike any other skin condition as it comes with so much embarrassment and shame. It robs people of confidence and affects their lives in many ways.

Here are a few common misconceptions about ace.

Myth: Washing your face often prevents breakouts.

Fact: Washing your face twice a day is usually all that is needed. Over-washing can lead to irritation and dehydration which will only aggravate your acne and make your skin even more red-looking. Since acne starts deep within the pore you need products that can penetrate the pore. Cleansing with the right cleanser is the first step.

Myth: Acne is caused by poor hygiene and/or acne is caused by dirt.

Fact: Since acne forms deep within the pore, dirt and surface oil have little to do with it. For most acne sufferers there is a genetic aspect to the way that their skin cells shed within the pore. People with acne tend to have skin cells that shed up to five times faster than the norm, and also the way they shed is very sticky and they all come off once which leads to setting the stage for a clogged pore to form.

Myth: Acne is caused by candy and french fries.

Fact: A diet high in iodides (the salt on those french fries) can make acne worse, but neither candy nor fried foods “cause” acne. Acne is an inherited disorder of the pores – you either are prone to it or not. Diet does play a role and for those with acne dietary changes are often called for to help reduce inflammation and irritation within the body. A diet low in processed foods, foods with a low glycemic index, and lots of vegetables and fruits are the best bet.

Myth: You just have to let acne run its course.

Fact: Some people do grow out of having acne, and some don’t. Even mild acne can leave scars so it’s best to try to get it under control as soon as possible.

Myth: Acne can be cured.

Fact: There is no “cure” for acne. Acne can be managed and controlled with the right products and used the right way.

If you are committed to getting your acne under control I would love to help and guide you along the way.
