Moisturizers Explained

If someone is just starting to follow a skincare routine the first purchase should be a cleanser and the second product to purchase would be a moisturizer. Moisturizers do so much for the skin no matter what skin type or skin condition you have, as long as you are using the right one for you.

Often people with dry skin go for a very heavy moisturizer but this isn’t a good indication of how moisturizing it will be on your skin. A light feeling moisturizer can have the ability to repair and moisturize better than a heavy one. It always comes down to the ingredients and how it’s formulated. Heavy moisturizers can feel good at the moment but without the correct formulation, it’s creating an artificial barrier without supporting the skin to become more healthy so that it’s making and keeping its own natural moisture.

Sometimes people with oily skin feel that they don’t need a moisturizer but moisture isn’t the same as oil. Some moisturizers can help regulate oil production and give the skin a more matte look and feel.

Acne sufferers are another group who can get very focused on drying out their skin and not moisturizing but if you think about it for a minute, you come to the realization that the skin can’t heal well in a dry environment. With acne, there is usually post-inflammatory pigmentation, either red or brown, and that can give the appearance of the acne being far more severe than it actually is. When the skin is stressed and dry it takes much longer for lesions to heal and for the pigmentation, they leave behind to fade.

As we age, our skincare needs to change too. You could have had oily skin as a teen but now as an adult, your skin might be producing much less oil and the moisturizer that you used to use (or maybe you just didn’t use one) is no longer effective.

Moisturizers can help with so many skin issues, such as

  • pigmentation

  • glycation

  • lack of hydration

  • overabundance of sebum

  • cyst formation

  • wrinkles

  • neck sagging

  • lax skin

  • diffuse redness

  • formation of capillaries

  • eczema

  • dermatitis
